Take Better Halloween Pictures – Here’s How

These 5 Tips from Shoot the Moon Photography will show you how to capture the best Trick or Treat memories

Dark conditions, rapid movement, face-blocking costumes, and nighttime conditions often lead to blurry, out of focus, or unusable pictures for many parents wishing to capture the fun of their children’s trick or treating experience.  Mequon photographer Joy Vertz, founder of Shoot the Moon Photography, offers these five tips to help parents capture the best trick or treat memories.

  1. If you have a “night” mode on your camera, select it. This will lower the shutter speed a bit, and open up the aperture (the opening that allows light in), which will allow the most light available into your camera. Most cameras have a flash range of about 6-10 feet. Make sure your subject is within this range to prevent your images from becoming too light or too dark.
  2. Get close!  The most common mistake is to stand too far away from your subject. Getting close to your child will help avoid background distractions and brighten up your child’s face.
  3. If there is some daylight, have your subject face the sun.  Late afternoon sun is flattering, and by standing with your back against the sun and having your child face the sun, you will be maximizing the available light.
  4. Try turning off the camera’s flash and taking a glowy jack-o-lantern photo.  You may need to ignore the warning lights your camera might produce. Get in close to your pumpkin and steady your arms on a chair or use a tripod.
  5. Don’t forget to capture the whole story!  Take images of your child putting on his or her costume, running from house to house, enjoying their candy (or one with their candy alone, spread out) and sleeping after the big day is done.
